The Science Behind the Palm Oil Refining Process

The production process of palm oil is divided into three main parts: pressing, refining and fractionation. Pressing is the process of extracting palm oil from palm fruits using the oil press machines. The crude palm oil refining and fractionation process is the deep processing of palm oil, after which high quality palm oil can be obtained. The main refining and fractionation process of palm oil involves the following steps: 

• Heating and Degumming Process: To remove colloidal impurities from crude palm oil, the general method is to heat and mix crude palm oil with water.
• Deacidification Process: Removal of free fatty acids from crude palm oil to prevent oxidation and deterioration for longer shelf life.
• Decolorization Process: Using some adsorbent to remove some color and impurities from the crude palm oil, and then filter out the adsorbent and get the clear palm oil.
• Deodorization Process: Steam is sprayed into the heated oil, and then a vacuum is used to carry the steam away along with the odor in the oil.
• Fractionation Process: (Fractionation is an optional step used to separate the palm oil into different fractions based on their melting points.) This process can produce different products such as palm olein (liquid fraction) and palm stearin (solid fraction).
